For the last week everytime I turned on my laptop the screen would be red but then fade back to the normal color. Last night while I was working the whole thing went black. I could barely see what was on the screen but I know it was still working. Does anyone have an idea what this may be? Do I need to replace the screen or might it be something smaller? I've only had this Toshiba laptop for about 3 years...
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

When I first turn it on I can see the Toshiba logo and then the Windows xp logo and the colors are fine. As soon as it goes to my login it goes black but you were right, if I hold a light over it I can see the colors still. Any idea how much it costs to replace the lamp?

The laptop screen is back-lit by a special fluorescent tube. It sounds like this has died. It (not the screen) can be replaced by your local computer shop.

By black I don't know if you meant black pixels or the light went out.

If you can hold a lamp over it and still see all the colors ok, you just need to replace your lamp, if you can't see colors (and look hard... lots of money at stake), then you probably have a loose wire and need to either get that repaired or the screen replaced
