Yes you can self teach/learn almost anything and drawing in particular is a good one.Grab a few books on line drawing, sketching, shading etc etc.For Cartoons i would develop a few characters and practice those in different positions and facial expressions.Copy a few cartoons you like for some practice.Alter them for more practice.Just practice practice practice.Good luck.

Most libraries have a section on "Arts Instruction" check yours. You want a book specific to drawing, maybe even cartooning. Many will have step by step exercises that increase and build on each lesson learned.

When I was younger I was given one of these books by my mother. Used it alot, even through art school.

Another tip, especially if you are thinking about cartooning is to just do it everyday. Make a cartoon of some of a funny event that happens to you each day, or an anecdote. Almost like a cartoon journal. Get a sketchbook. Carry it always with a few pencils or whatever you like to draw with. While it's nice to have the good pencils to draw with if you have to start with a plain old pencil, don't worry. Try to not get too caught up in the "accessories" of art supplies and focus on just praticing. Don't worry if you don't draw something you absolutely love every single day. Its just a sketchbook! Make sure you commit to making time to do this every day!

Finally, there are lots of opportunities to enter your drawings in contests. I posted below a link to the society of children's book writers and illustrators. They always have a competition where they give you a story and you need to draw the illustration for it. This might be a good place to start, but I am sure there are others out there.

Go to your local public library. Ask the staff for basic books on drawing and cartooning.

You need to practice every day- or frequently. Keep those skills up.

I have gone back to drawing classes offered at a local university. (Continuing Ed classes). These classes are nice. Small numbers of students, lots of one on one with the instructor and the comments from the instructor are constructive and designed to build confidence.

Get a nice sketchbook and buy some very good pencils. The books you buy at the library will tell you what kind and how many to buy. The leads are all different. You will need a good eraser too. I use a kneaded rubber eraser. Not those cheap ones on the end of the #2 pencils.

Good luck. It's a lot of fun.I enjoy it.

Just start drawing. Pick up books that have the style you like and practice, practice, practice. There are some how-to books that can give you tips and even tracing can help you learn.

I'm self-taught but plan to take a few classes eventually. Here is a site with some of my drawings as well as many others. There are even some useful tutorials.

Hope this helps.
