He passed b/f i was born and do not know alot about him.He was in the army in WW2 and got a few medals and such. I know he was a marksman and shot a 50cal.He was from arkansas. can any one help

Not sure on this one, since I am from UK. But have a few general ideas. Firstly, the US Army and veteran societies will have records that can be dug through. Also, I would say that it would depend upon where he was posted. If he thought in the Pacific theatre you will have different options than the European theatre. For example, if your grandfather was envolved in D Day, then the British Imperial War museum may have documents/photographs that are relevant. You may also try various publishers like Vanguard, Osprey, After the Battle.

Initially, I would look at discovering his unit. There are probably going to be societies that deal with unit records, memorabilia and former members. A general search of the web will also provide photo sites. A link to this site a few months ago showed an archive site of WW2 colour photos.

In addition to this are the medals. Whenever a medal is awarded, the army will keep a record. In this manner, people can not buy a medal in a shop and then pretend that it is their award. If you win a medal, there is a paper trail. Try here first.
