Okay, i have just bought a used weight set and the owner just used a wire brush to clean the weights but it's still rusty. It's iron and it has orange rust on there. Is there any way i can get the rest of the rust off? Any off the counter products from wal-mart or etc... I've tried home lemon with baking soda but it takes to long and is not as effective. Is there also a way i can polish the weights as well? Please help and thank you in advance. I was thinking about WD-40 but doesn't that leave grease behind and make the weights slippery?

Gemplers has a rust removing solvent in their catalog. I have never used it so I don't know how well it works. Another option would be sandblasting. Lastly, you could paint over the rust. Use an oil base primer and any paint you want. I doubt wd-40 would do much.

Try a wire brush attachment on an electric drill.

Once they are free of rust, paint them with Rustolium or an equivalent rust inhibiting polyurethane coating.

Paint after wire brush. As already been said above. Your problem is the rust will come back as quickly as over night if you don't paint soon. PAINT. I am a welder bare metal does that.

Coke (soda) it works really well, after you use it make sure to rinse all of the soda off with hot water. As for polishing the weights try jewelry cleaner, and or silver polish cleaner. They can all be found at most stores. Good luck!

the quickest and easiest way is to sandblast after that clean with acetone and prime and paint with rustolium ,or sand paper ,a wire brush, if the weights are made of cast iron ,then you could wash in warm soapy water with a wire brush and rinse then towel dry and prime and paint with rustolium,
if your trying to get that mirror shine you see in gyms take them to a shop that does chrome and have them do it

naval jelley it comes in a can and you can use to remove rust on the weights or on your bbq etc. the can is about 3 to 4 inches tall and about 3 inches round. you put it on let it set for a while and just rub it off.

Depend what your doing, if its your car, you'll want to sand that down and repaint, if its decroative crap, get a rust clear with oxalic acid, mix it with water, use a wire brush on tha stuff and get er done. then rinse, use a rust paint, + prime first.
And your done.
