I have a Sony Vaio laptop. Up until a few weeks ago, if I wanted to scroll down the page, all I had to do was move my finger up and down the right side of the touch pad. That's not working anymore. Also, when I hover over something now, whether it be a desktop item or a file within a folder, anything, really, it automatically selects it. I've tried going into the mouse settings and finding the problem, but all the options read as if I had an external mouse. I've tried looking this up in the Microsoft knowledge base, but nothing there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Usually the scrolling on my laptop can be fixed with a quick reboot. Since this has been going on for a few weeks for you, it seems to be something else.

Have you recently installed an external mouse on the laptop? If so, you can either uninstall the driver for that mouse or go over to Sony's support website and reinstall any driver related to your laptop's mouse.

To uninstall any mouse driver, simply go into your Mouse settings > Hardware tab > Select the mouse of your choice, then click the "Properties" button at the bottom. Click the "Driver" tab on the new window and click the last button "Uninstall".

There might have been a new mouse driver installed somewhere.

Hi. I had the same 'hover select' problem but I found that the pad was sensitive. If my finger left the pad for even a moment it would select the link. Now I press a tiny bit.

For the hover thing try this:
Open "My Computer"
In the menu bar click Tools>Folder Options
On the general tab see if "Single-click to open an item (point to select)" is checked, if it is then check "Double-click to open an item (single-click to select)"
