I've had recieved jury summons twice for the past 2 years. The instructions say to call after 5pm the day before the duty date, I have and a automated voice says to call the following day btw 9am-1pm, for further instructions, and I do. Another automated recording says I have completed my jury duty for a year.

I'm just confused, am I not suppose to present in a court and actually serve as a juror??? Have you had the same experience?

By the way I'm in California. Thanks.

yes, that is how it works in at least some jurisdictions in CA. I had the same thing last year, luckily during the week right before Xmas when almost no trials start.

They generally don't know until the day before approximately how many jurors, if any are needed, so no reason to have hundreds and hundred of people come every day when they only need a few. But if they need a lot (as could happen) then they need to have lots ready to come in to.

When I was in Baltimore, you had to go for one day or one trial and just sit there all day hoping to be called (or not called :)

Last June about a week before I was scheduled to leave my job—I started a business--I got a jury summons and took advantage of the opportunity to try and make the jury pool so I could run out those last couple of days and not have to return to work, and not only did I make the pool but was selected to be juror number 1.

The trial was a murder case and we deliberated for three entire days. First on the verdict and then on the punishment phase.

I highly recommend the experience to anyone so they can witness first hand how the justice system works. It is a high privilege to serve on a jury.

The jury was locked in to letting a murdered get off lightly because he was a highly respected and wealthy local businessman were it not for my impassioned pleas to get them to look at the facts, ignore his money and to think about the victims.

I truly believe had I not served on that particular jury, that he would have gotten off with a slap to the wrist. You should have seen the look on his face when I read the verdict—that precious moment alone was worth all the time and trouble.

You should go down to the courthouse and ask someone face to face on how to proceed—you should not ignore jury summons. It’s the least you can do for your fellow citizens.

in actuality, you have already figured which you have have been given been enable loose of jury duty, so because it somewhat is a load off. The discrepancy a pair of week or 3 days, i'm guessing meaning no longer only jury duty, however the common 3 days waiting for the call technique previous to easily jury duty.

They summon a pool of people. Sometimes everyone serves, however many time they have more than are needed. Sounds like they had enough people and did not actually need you this time. Just be glad it's a phone in system as opposed to a "show up every day" system.

A summons is a court order to appear before the judge. Everyone who is selected for jury duty receives one and in most states it's the same process.
If you cannot reach anyone by phone, be sure you show up or the judge WILL ISSUE a bench warrant for your arrest.
good luck.

You may not serve on the jury but you still need to go and check in for jury selection because you can get into trouble if you don't go.

Being summoned for jury duty doesn't necessarily mean you are going to serve.
