authority for about 3 years. They require that you report any income changes within 14 days that the change happens. On Dec of 2007 I lost my job & filed for unemployment, as you all must know the whole process w/unemployment takes about 1-2 months before you FINALLY get your check. I had ZERO $$$ so I really had no choice but to apply for cash aid/welfare. I let housing authority know about my major decrease in income immediately (they took 2 months to adjust my rent). Then on Jan 2, 2007 my Doctor put me on disability for major stress & depression. So immediately that closed my case for unemployment, although they still had to pay me for the month of Dec 2006 because at that time I was able to work. So all these goverment programs all take a while to kick in, so I received most of my money (back pay from welfare, unemployment & disability which took about 3-4 weeks) the end of Jan 2007. I reported my income changes to Housing Auth/Sect 8 w/in the 14days, they are claiming

that I did not turn it in on time, which I KNOW I DID!!! It took them 3 months to adjust my rent AGAIN, & they are now charging me $1300.00 all because they are claiming I did not turn it in on time. They told me had I turned it in on time they would not have charged me the $1300.00. I am now about 4 months pregnant the neighbors that live down stairs from me are mentally challenged & smoke heavily, the smell comes into my apartment its offel. About 3 weeks ago the mentally challenged neighbors tried to attack me w/a baseball bat. I want to GET the HECK out of this apartment however because I still owe Housing authority $900.00 (i've made payments) they will not let me move out of this apartment. My Doctor has writtn Housing Auth a letter requesting that I move else where, & I have also falln from the stairs & was hospitalized & I provided them all this info & the police rep about the bat incident & they still wont let me move, WHAT CAN I DO?

There's not a lot you can do, other than move out on your own. In most areas, Sec 8 Housing properties have waiting lists of several months. Getting to the top of that list is not an easy process.

I assume you aren't challenging their demands for $1300, since you're paying it. If you are serious about the timely notices, that should be easy to clear up by asking for copies of the records involved.

I'm really not sure. I know the smoking is a real PITA my downstairs neighbors smoked in my old apartment. Do you work now? Can you get off of Section 8 and move out that way? Otherwise, you are pretty much at their mercy, so to speak. Good luck!
