whether it is religion, magic or drugs, it seems people have a natural propensity toward the irrational.
Any ideas?

I think it maybe be based on faith and hope. We all need something to believe. For instance you, your faith that the things you mention are irrational. This you find comfort in.

I think it is because so few are taught to think rationally.
We raise children with the idea of mythical beings like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny for heaven's sake. That sort of irrational thought process sticks with you all your adult life.

Because humans have emotions, imagination, and an unconscious that is producing symbolic images all the time.

being irrational is perspective. I see it at times as spontanaity (or however you spell it) I have to make a huge desicion right now and i know wat ive decided, pretty much everyone is going to think im insane.. but i have to do it, even i think its crazy .. but right.
