just make a numberline starting at -11 and going to +11. Dont forget 0. so it should go -11 -10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11. start at -5 and go to the right 8 spaces bc its a + sign. since it is -14 just ignore the + sign before it so move to the left 14 spaces. This means your answer should be -11. In the future if you ever see 2 minus signs side by side then just cancel them out and they equal 1 plus sign.

Think of it as maintaining a checking account. If you're $5.00 overdrawn and deposit $8.00, how much do you now have inthe account? Three, right? Then when you write a check for $14.00, you're overdrawn again--by how much?

In other words, when you add a negative number, you're actually subtracting it. If the problem began "8 + -5," you'd probably see the answer up to that point more quickly. And 8 + -5 is the same as -5 + 8, jsut as 2 = 3 is the same as 3+ 2.

At this point you should understand the concept and be able to figure out the problem on your own rather than depending on someone just to tell you the answer.

Draw yourself a number line that extends from negative 30 to positive 30. Put your finger on -5 then add 8 by moving your finger eight numerals to the right, you should end at +3, then subtract 14 by moving your finger 14 numerals to the left, you should end at -11. -11 is your answer.

3 plus -14 is like saying 3 - 14

if this is really to hard just add 14 and 5 put a neg. in front of it -19 then add 8 which'll be like subrating and keep the neg sign. -11
