According to NASA, the orbit decayed resulting in its crash 'at an uncertain location' on the lunar surface.

Hi. Great question, Got me surfing through some memorable sites. I think answer 1 is correct. I assumed the ascent stage would still be in the plane of the orbit but that may not have been true. If it were, an approximate location could be determined by the time it took to impact. The impact was recorded by the seismometer left behind.

I can't find any references to it's crash location, but for some reason I think it was sent down into the Sea of Storms. They did this to test the seismic experiments left on the moon - and were surprised when the moon 'rang like a bell' for 5 minutes after the crash.
