When you realize that you have dialed a wrong number (once the other person has answered and confirmed you are wrong) do you just hang up? Apologize? Ask the answerer "Is this 555-7523? Are you sure, cuz this is the number they gave me."

I think there's this shock at first, and then denial. It's pretty funny. Plus, you're never quite sure if someone may be pretending they're not the right person! I have a really funny example. When I was about 12 I was so into these little stuffed animals that MacDonald's was putting in their Happy Meals. I wasn't the only one! Many MacDonald's had sold out of some or all the animals! So, my mom said she would take me to a MacDonald's if I could find one that had the animals I was missing. I dutifully called for several days, finding the hippo, lion, tiger, etc. Well, finally, I was needing the monkey and my set would be complete! After all those calls, I was pretty tired, so I cut the formalities to a minimum. Besides, the MD's workers just wanted to know what you wanted. I dialed the number. Me: "Do you have any monkeys?" Elderly Woman: "What?" Me: "Do you have any monkeys?" Elderly Woman: "Monkeys! What are you talking about!?!" Me: "This is MacDonald's . . . right?" Elderly Woman: "No, sweetie, it isn't." Me: "Oh, I'm so sorry, ma'am!" I'm sure she had a good laugh over that one! I know my mother did, but I was mortified!

I'm with Sara on this one. I've talked with people for a long time on a "miss dial".

I call back twice more. By then they are pissed. On the 4th call (after I have waited 10 minutes) I say, "This is so and so, has there been any calls for me?"
