My 16-month-old son has his front four teeth on the top and bottom, and I recently discovered two molars coming in on the top - but there's a gap where the cuspids should be. Is this how teeth usually come in?

Yes, they usually get their 1st set of molars before getting their pointy teeth, the cuspids.

molars do come in first... I-teeth (canines) come in after that. My son is 16 months and has 3 of his 4 canines cut already.

That link lists the typical, but not all children follow it. My son had 6 on top and still only 2 on bottom at abotu 15 months.
