Otasco Inc., a Tulsa-based retail chain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization and closed 170 stores in 11 states, said Jerry Goodman, chairman and chief executive of the company. Otasco's 1,600 employees were told that they were being discharged, he said.

Mr. Goodman said Otasco, bought by its employees four years ago, had $187 million in assets and $163 million in liabilities. He said that the company had reached an impasse in its negotiations with its bankers and that it had decided to file for Chapter 11 because it did not have the money to buy its Christmas inventory. Otasco specializes in automotive products and appliances.

I don't know about OTASCO but I know of two Western Auto stores in Maine. As recently as five months ago both were still in business. I never heard of Otasco. Was it a regional chain?
