wainscoting is both lining of boards and paneling

You get what you pay for. Paneling is cheaper and easier to install, but it doesn't look as rich and classy as real Wainscoting.
You can also get different grades of wainscoting. Some is thicker and the groves are deeper giving it a real nice look. You almost have to use glue either way because of todays wall construction. Sixteen inch centers on the studs leaves a lot of dead wall space where nails will not bite and you will find your wainscoting pulling away. Have fun.

Home Depot sells a wainscotting kit that consists of panels made of a water proof material. The panels are pre-primed and can be installed using only Powergrab adhesive(no nails). The pieces are about 10" wide and the slip together nicely. I have used these in two bathrooms with excellent results. They also have the top and bottom trim pieces right in the same section. It all cuts easily and is easy to handle.

Wainscotting is a process of covering the bottom 30 - 36" of a wall with wood pieces or paneling. They now also sell plastic panels but they can be easily damaged.

WAINSCOTING IS USUALLY A RAISE PANEL WALL FINISH SYSTEM CONSISTING OF SAME SIZE PINE PANELS FRAMED TO THE WALL WITH 1X PINE AND CAPPED WITH PINE CHAIR RAIL. THE RAIL HEIGHT IS USUALLY ABOUT 36" - 40" FROM THE FLOOR. THE 1X FRAME SHOULD BE GLUED AND NAILED TO THE WALL AND BE RABBITED TO ALLOW FOR A "FLOATING" TYPE PANEL ALLOWING FOR EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION. DO NOT GLUE/NAIL THE PANEL TO THE WALL. IF USING MANUFACTURED PANELING, YOU CAN GLUE AND NAIL TO THE WALL AT STUD LOCATIONS AT 6" O.C. DO NOT NAIL TO THE 1X FRAME.
PANEL/FRAME ARE USUALLY 24" - 30" WIDE BY 32"-36" TALL. THIS DEPENDS ON THE WIDTH OF THE WALLS AND THE SIZE OF THE ROOM.
