I'll be staying at Mandalay Bay for New Year's Eve, but plan on doing our festivities at the Palms. I went to Vegas a couple years ago for NYE, and the town was completely gridlocked in traffic. My question is, are there side streets (not the Strip) from Mandalay to get to the Palms via taxi?

Depending on what time you plan to head over to Palms, trust me you don't want to get on a taxi on New Years Eve in Vegas or you will be risking ringing in the New Year in the back seat of a cab while the meter is running.
The Vegas strip and all side streets are jammed New Years Eve. The easiest way to get from Mandalay Bay to Palms that night is the Monorail.

From Mandalay Bay, walk to the MGM Grand Station and take the monorail to the Bally's / Paris Las Vegas Station. This is the fastest and cheapest way to move around that night. You will be gliding above traffic and the crowd with a smile on your face.

A good/decent taxi driver should know his way around all the chaos, but the best advice is to head South on Las Vegas Blvd.(the strip) to Russell Rd. --it actually runs east and west next to Mandalay Bay. This will take you over the I-15 and then there are several choices to take you North to the Palms. Either Industrial (which may be really busy because it does run North & South and many people will use it as a quick alternate. Going a little further West on Russell before heading North to Flamingo is usually the best bet if you are looking to get their quick! HAVE FUN!

Neither hotel has a great location, in terms of access to the rest of the strip, but Mandalay Bay has the advantage of being ON the strip, with a free tram that gets you into a better location. Palms is off the strip and you'd have to take a taxi from there to the strip (no shuttles). But Palms is definitely a bigger party hotel - it's probably a better place to celebrate a birthday like that.

I would say the second part of what 'lvgeno" said would be the best way if you are planning on taking a taxi. The only reason I say that is because last year I was going to the RIO and we live on the east side of town, so I took the 95 to the 15, thought I was going to take the Flamingo exit and I was dead wrong! They had closed any and all exits from Sahara to Trop on the 15 freeway. If you are taking a taxi please keep this in mind don't let them take you for a "ride". Enjoy NYE here in LV.

The Palms is west of the strip on Flamingo not on the strip. Take a taxi .... first you will be traveling south on Las Vegas Blvd to Russell. On Russell you will go onto 15 north. Exit Flamingo and turn left away from the strip to the Palms. Leave early as possible because traffic will be bad. The best thing is you are always headed away from the strip. .

The other way for a taxi to go is on Russell continue to Arville and then go north on Arville to Flamingo. Right on Flamingo. The driver will know of the other side streets to get there. Just be prepared for traffic.

There are a ton of ways to get there, but your driver will have to do a lot of detouring. He'll know all the back ways.
