Preeminent? It means he predated all eminence. Eminence first existed in baseball in the late 30's, so since Ruth came before that, he is classified as preeminent. Other people such as Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Charlie Chaplin, are also preeminent. But Ruth is the most preeminent because he ate the most hot dogs. Thomas Jefferson was the least preeminent despite coming before the late 30's because he ate no hot dogs.

The Babe could do it all.. He was a heck of a pitcher.. including a string of scorless innings in the World Series.. he had 94 life time wins and an ERA at 2.24.. His home run power is well documented as is his batting average, a life time .342 hitter.. but what gets lost is he was no slug on the basepaths either.. he had 123 career stolen bases.. He also had a decent arm, five times in his career, he had 15 or more outfield assists.. He was probabaly the first 'five-tool' player with a nasty fastball to boot..

Preeminent --> Having paramount rank, dignity, or importance : outstanding, supreme.

It means Babe Ruth is held in the highest esteem, and is the greatest ball player to ever live.

Being the preeminent player means he is the most outstanding or noteworthy, which he certainly was compared to his peers, hitting more home runs in some years than entire teams did, and drawing the most media attention.

Was he the best all-around player though? He could hit and pitch as well as anyone, but his fielding and base running weren't as great. For total excellence in all areas, my vote would be for Willie Mays.

Not only was Ruth the best, he was the savior of baseball after the "Black Sox" scandal nearly destroyed the game.

Preeminent: It refers to significance and importance and has nothing to do with performance, ability, or being the best. Being a published writer I would have thought you would know that Legends.
