Sounds like they are living in filth. They need to keep their house clean. That means not leaving food around, clean up the kitchen and the bathrooms on a regular basis, and don't open windows unless they have a screen.

p.s.- if they are fruit flies, you can kill them by leaving slices of lime around the place. (I've tried this before and it works so stop giving me thumbs down).
Also they lay eggs in banana peels so make sure you don't keep the peels in the garbage after you eat the banana. You'll need to take the garbage out ASAP.

These are either fruit flies or drain flies.
First off, you need to find the source. Fruit flies can live off a piece of potato that has fallen between the stove and cabinets for weeks so look around and under everything. You'll know it when you find the source. Also, shake your house plants. Some plants can harbor fruit flies. If you find them in a plant it's probably best to just get rid of the plant.
If they are coming from the drains you have a bigger problem. You can try some clorox or something of the such but that may only be a temporary solution. There may be a break somewhere in the line where the flies are breeding.
If you don't want to call an exterminator you can try this. I've tried it myself and it works.
Fill juice glasses with cider vinegar about 1/2 inch full and then add a few drops of lemon, lime, or apple dish soap. Place the glasses around the house where you see the flies.
This will attract and kill them - but again you have to find the source.

I live in a rural area, lots of farms, and in the summer time the flies get bad here, though not as bad as Florida flies lol. Anyway, this lady told me to fill a zip lock baggie with water, and nail it to the wall by all the entrance doors. She swore it worked, and I of course laughed at her thinking that sounds like some back wood hickabilly remedy and forgot about it :) Then we had an electrician out a few weeks ago, he said he heard the same thing. He said it supposedly does work to keep the flies out, not sure how, maybe something with the vibrations in the water? Haven't tried it yet, winter time now, but I will in the spring time. Figure it can't hurt, just look like a fool with a ziplock bag of water nailed to the wall :)

That probably won't help since they're already in the house. Sounds gross, but we ended up having to hang a few of those sticky fly strips around the house. Just don't hang them in a walking area, that's the grossest feeling in the world walking into one of them.....And buy some fly swatters. They're obviously laying their eggs somewhere, does she have any caged pets? If so, clean the cages out more frequently, like daily.

He/She could use an electric fly swapper. An electric fly swapper is powered by 2 or 3 AA size batteries which generate an electric grid around it. When the fly makes contact with it, it gets an electric shock and dies instantaneously.

Check all potted plants and any vegetables or fruits stored in the house. Places where flies can breed need to be eliminated or they will keep coming back.
Hope this helps!
Cheers!

Burn the house down.

*Sorry, but it's the truth. If the flies are that bad the larvae are most likely in the walls. It is probably an older home with little or no insulation. There is no reall effective way to get rid of them. They will come back over and over. If they are all very small this means you have billions of larvae, and it's just like a huge fly breeding grounds now. Everything you do will be futile, and in a couple of months they are back. You can try one of those bug bombs, but I don't think it will work for this. Your best bet is to burn it down to the ground like I said before.

Have the house blessed like they did in the Amityville Horror. Maybe there are evil spirits there! Ü JK

Why not hire and exterminator? If nothing else is working - I think this is there best and final option, other than my first suggestion. Ü

Lighten up people it's a joke! My real answer is to get an exterminator in there - sheesh!

Flies are attracted to light.

Don't open doors at night.

If you do get flies in you room we turn the bathroom light on and the other lights off. I 5 minutes all the flies are in the bathroom and we can shut the door. I just don't want them climbing on me in my sleep. The go into your mouth and lay eggs ..nasssssty

I think you can buy 4 of those sticky fly traps for $1--be careful to take them down before they get too full, or they just might fall on your head (pulling all your hair out).

If they are that small they aren't flies, they are gnats. Do you have fruit out and about in the house? Maybe they are fruit flies, which are also very small.
