There are many repellents that work.
First, the very effective and very sardonic counter-reaction is to simply ignore them. Like a little child throwing a tantrum because they want and demand attention, ignoring them and their little immature snide remarks takes away any pleasures they might derive from your responses. If you don't respond they'll soon go find some other way to work out their little insecurity issues.
Second, sincerity, honestly and a thick skin that deflects such people's remarks are all great tools that either discourage little boy troll tactics or holds them up to the light to show the world how foolish, how uncool and how immature they really are.
I simply chose to ignore them whenever possible.

According to what I just just found out from an answer to one of my questions, ignore their need for attention and ostracize them. Sounds good to me!
