First of all,the phrase "separation of church and state"is not in the constitution but in a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote to a local baptist church.According the the original writers there is supposed to be a freedom of religion and not freedom from religion! They just didn't want what happened over in Britain as having a state sponsered religion happen over in the States.

Church and State ARE separated.. not matter how new anyone is to thinking about how a gov't operates (you?)... everything from SCIENTOLOGY to Branch Davidison's are tolerated (oh, sorry.. they don't teach about our heavy-handed FBI under Bill Clinton, and the Dems are supposed to be the Liberal Ones, right?)

The USA is based on moral principles to govern society by law that makes sense for the well-being of its citizens, and the uniform treatment of every one... and the "God" mentioned isn't connected by name. Don't steal, don't murder.. these are principles brought by 1,000s of years of human development with living in society -- and that gov't has a role as a protector and arbitor, and we all should agree, in commitment to that rule of law.

What's your point? Is this a thin Supreme Court reference, or some waffly, scared to death ultra-Leftist view for gay marriage as if "the Church" is stopping this? These are concepts that didn't exist, in rule by Aristocracy or royalty. "that all men are created equal" implies a Creator, sure, but what's your beef -- that Thomas Jefferson et al. weren't athiests?

Maybe what you don't understand, is how Human Society got that way... -- AND WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WITHOUT resolute and sound moral/ethical principles that allow you to be as Wrong as You Want And Cab Be... especially western government & democracy... and the role of uniform and caring behavior (vs. what would happen, without a strong moral code to use as a rule of thumb much less law).

We need agnostics in office to truly be able to separate the two. They keep catering to those who find everything offensive. I say screw them, if they don't like it don't look at it, be part of it, or be near it. I'm not christian, but it pisses me off that the muslims keep asking for removal of xmas trees and other customs that were here prior to their back asswards coming here in the first place. Mark my words, if we don't fix the loop hole of "Majority Rules", one day we will be under sharia law.

About as seriously as freedom OF religion will be. Public office does NOT mean you give up your right of worship. The minute a politician wants oversight in their religious dealings (including belief in no god), they will want the same oversight in yours.

the idea that the separation of church and state in the US is an idea that is not being taken seriously is not correct. see: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=separation+of+church+and+state&fr=ush-ans

you also may want to study some constitutional law to find out how incorrect this idea is.
