The Mets have the good young talent to deal with, could they be the winner in the race for Santana?

alomew: You bring up some good points. The only thing I would like to add is that all the teams interested in Santana are asking for a 72 hour window to negotiate a long term agreement with him now so they can avoid his free agent status next year

This entire scenario reminds me of the Randy Johnson thing. Forget for a moment about trades and free agency and all the hoop-la that goes with big names moving from team to team. Remember the NY media sounding off about how the Yankees, with Randy Johnson, were a shoe in to break Seattle's 116 wins? Remember how everyone was planning the parade route in the Big Apple even before the season started? I bring this up because it seems that as far as everyone is concerned, whoever gets Santana is going to win the world series.

It's really funny because the reality of it is that only three or four teams have enough to actually get it done. There is no guarantee that Santana equals a championship.

The point is this, the Twins must and I mean MUST deal him away sometime very soon or Santana walks at the end of the year and they get NOTHING!! There is little, if any chance that the Twins can sign him to a new contract because they just cannot afford him anymore.

Like I said, that leaves less than a hand full of teams able to pay him what he wants. If you look at the present rosters of the contenders you will see that of all the teams, the Yankees are in a "MUST DEAL FOR SANTANA" situation more than anyone else. They will not be able to compete with Boston or Detroit for top honors in the American League unless they end up getting him. My contention has always been that a proven comodity holds a lot more credibility than a player with "potential".

Steinbrenner needs to stick a cork in it and get the deal done or we Yankee fans can expect two or three more cold winters. Even here in Florida!! lol

Don't count the Yankees or Red Sox out yet. They apparently are two of a few teams that can afford him and have the right talent to exchange. The Twins pushed to see just how far each of these teams will go. Now that they know the limits and knowing that Santana will be a free agent after this next season, the Twins will probably re-instigate negotiations before spring training and get a deal done.

Omar Minaya sounded pretty emphatic that they were not interested in trading Reyes but that does not always mean anything, as we all know. The Twins appear intent on raiding someone's farm for Santana but I personally have wondered if it is worth trading the farm for a soon to be free agent who could potentially ask for $25 mil a year, meaning a team could lose great prospects, possibly a star level starter and wind up with nothing to show for it in a year if Santana goes FA and signs with another team. Unless he is going to sign a new contract for his new team and not go FA in a year, I would not do it at all unless that one piece could push my team to the trophy - and I do mean winning it all, not just getting to the NLCS or going to the Big Show and losing.

No opposition will surpass yet another. each branch seems to have a minimum of a few. AL needed: Twins-Tigers, Twins-White Sox AL East: purple Sox-Yankees AL West: can not think of of any NL needed: Cubs-playing cards NL East: Mets-Phillies NL West: Giants-Dodgers Interleague: Yankees-Mets, Cubs-White Sox To me, there is not extra powerful opposition than White Sox-Twins. Why? i admire the White Sox. and then my 2d favourite.....White Sox-Cubs. residing close to Chicago, i comprehend the dislike between the Cubs and White Sox, the Cubs and playing cards, and the White Sox and Twins. yet those rivalries do no longer seem to activity ESPN because of the fact they're interior the Midwest the place there are actually not as many followers because of the fact the East Coast....it is all with regard to the money. all of it has to do with your opinion. yet you are the main suitable option in announcing that the purple Sox-Yankees opposition is media pushed.

I don't see it. They have Carlos Gomez and.......that's about it to offer. Phillip Humpber and Aaron Heilman (both rumored in trade proposal) just won't cut it. Not for Santana. The only way Santana will go to the Mets is if they offer Jose Reyes. Translation: it's not going to happen.

No They would need to put together a awesome package which would include their 2 top outfilders and a couple of top pitchers. The twins want a 4 for 1 offer.

the mets young talent isnt coveted - i dont see the mets getting santana w/o reyes in the deal. the twins will want quality players not just a bunch of players in that deal

I'm not sure I see a lot of chance of that happening - I would think Reyes is an "untouchable" as far as the Mets are concerned, and unless something changes I believe the Twins would want him included.

WoW, if they do I personally won't care as a Sox fan 'cause the Sox offered them a deal about 4 days ago and they still haven't responded.
