Both will be good performers
Co bolt SS if you like getting into small street races wit imports and some other domestics too just for red light laugh ts, HHR SS is a funny looking retro panel wagon that's the answer to having a supercharged PT cruiser, its not much to look at the style says "new aftermarket parts" hot rodding, but its up to you I like the Cobolt ss just the way it looks and the engine can make extreme power through GM's performance Parts. The HHR SS would throw every one off if you were to modify it. kinda stealth and you could beat a srt-4 in a 1/4 mile race wit both.
The GM Performance built Cobolt SS beat the better of imports like( Integra Type R, Civic SI, S2000 which was its biggest competition, RSX Type s, VW R32, BMW Z3) at the BF Goodrich track finials coming 2ND to the more powerful Mits EVO 7 in total track time. Cobolt beat em in handling, engine performance brake performance & this car was the first Gen colbolt released too...

The SS Cobalt would be faster and handle better on mountain roads but seeing its a coupe you can't carry much in the way of passengers or cargo. Can be inconvenient if the need arises. Personally with my needs I'd go for the HHR.

The Cobalt has character, performance, and it is highly-rated. The HRR is Chevy's weak answer to the PT Cruiser, and it's the ugliest thing ever produced by GM except for the Aztek, if you ask me, which you did. I would get a Cobalt.

It's the same drive train and the same chasis. Do you want to look cool or haul stuff?
Personally the HHR is ugly so I'd pick the cobalt.

Get the HHR, you can trick it out now with a cool speaker box in the back. When you decide to start a family you can remove the speaker box to make room for the stroller ride.

A car that doesn't say chevrolet on it. I have an 06 Cobalt and its been a piece of crap since day 1. Now with about 16,000 miles on it, it spent a month in the shop having the transmission rebuilt, apparently the internal tranny parts are very cheap aluminum, the syncros were wore out in 3rd, and there was a part missing from the reverse rod, which explained why it was such a pain getting into reverse. 1st gear is hard to engage from a stop, reverse is still difficult to engage. The HHR's are chevy's version of the PT cruiser, both of which have always been pieces of crap.
Buy a Toyota.
