The Brittish showed no love for the Indian people. They took the resources, what few there are, from India and often paid almost nothing for them. The Brittish provided no development in India and no financial gain.

The Indian people lost what benefits they had as a country and as a people. They banded together and fought the Brittish for their freedom. They did not have enough strength to win such a war and that is where Mahatma Gandhi stepped in and used peaceful protesting to win freedom for the Indian people.

Take care,
Troy

India was not a nation before .The British colonised a vast area consisting of several kingdoms ruled by different kings. This vast region was just a Geographical expression , called, INDIA. When you say Scandinavia it means a region , not a country. When you say "Arabia", it means a region and not a country.Similarly, when you say 'Latin America" , it does not mean you are naming a nation.
India was like this. The colonial power built good roads, lrails, postal system, police system, legal system etc to administer such a huge area properly without realising that this would usher in a feeling of nationalism in the minds of the mass of this region ,especially, once the people of this region came in contact with a race which had great nationalist feeling .Later on some leaders just grew from within the inhabitants of this area and they raised the slogan of Indian Nationalism.Even today, India is not a Nation in real sense of the term. This simply a Political Unit.

Prior to the British, India was a patchwork of many small kingdoms. By unifying the country under their rule, the British provided a framework for a united an independent India. They trained and educated thousands of Indians, who later became the members of the independent government. The British provided transportation and communication networks which helped to unify the country and made it easier for opposition to organize. And, not least, they provided a common enemy.
