I don't think there would have been as much initial trust in the country, since nearly everyone in that day saw Washington as the man who led us to win the Revolutionary War. The War is an up-and-down story in itself, so I won't get into it, but they all felt that after the war, Washington was the ONLY choice to be the first leader of our young nation.
It was most likely not only symbolically, but psychologically important to the country. Funny enough, one of the few people who really didn't want to do it (but understood why they wanted him).
