Don't chew them, for one. Keep them moisturized, by either regularly using hand lotion or with cuticle oil (olive oil works great, too). Keep them at a length appropriate for your lifestyle, file them in one direction only (not in a back and forth motion), and use a three-way buffer to buff them to a healthy, brilliant shine!
Or you can do what I do and just get gel enhancements. It takes care of it all, and you don't have to do a thing except enjoy chit-chatting with your nail tech (I am a nail tech, by the way) and say bye-bye to your money.

rub nails of both hands against each other for five minutes every morning empty stomach. rub lemon on nails n fingers everyday. it gives strength and shine to nails. also do proper manicure.

the only thing i do is rub lotion (a good kind) into my fingernails , and my nails look like they are fake! works for me, so might work for you!
