Advantage is harder to crack by brute force. Using numbers, upper and lower case letters and standard symbols, at 2.5 million password attempts a second a 6 character password takes about a day to crack, 7 characters takes a couple of months and 8 characters takes about 20 years. But as a longer, secure password is harder to remember, users have a habit of using the same password for multiple systems and accounts. This means that if one password is captured, they all are.

Advantage - Hard to guess thus more secure. Some software package will try to break passwords and can try millions of password variations every second.
Disadvantage - Takes a long time to type in.

The advantages for the "owner" are the disadvantages for the "nonowner".
For example, harder to crack=harder to remember.
A long password, not available to the non-owner, or not remembered by the owner, results in unavailability or total disabling of perhaps critical equipment, including the central computer itself. Changing of a password on, for example, a router, may disable wireless routing/communication by other critical devices in the network.

The advantage is that - if they are strong, meaning they have a mix of upper/lower case letters, as well as numbers and symbols - they are harder to crack.
The major disadvantages are that people are more likely to forget them, and they take up more space in a database, or other storage medium.
There are others, these are just what I consider to be the most relevant.

Advantages:
Better security
Someone less likely to guess or crack
Disadvantages:
You're going to have troubles remembering it
Unless you are a terrific typer, you're going to make mistages entering it
If you use the same password for everything you do, your password might not fit within the guideline requirements of some sites and you'll have to improvise and end up with multiple passwords to remember.
