Because the first century was pre-1000 A.D. , the century number is always a year behind the current year.... so the 20th century began in 1901, and the 19th century took place during the 1800s. I hope this helps!

The best way to understand it is to think of it as the age of a person.At what point would you say your little brother or sister is one year old?
It is always on the annivery of the day s/he is born.
So, to answer your question, 1st year occured on 1/1/0001;
First century occured on 1/1/0101 and finally
the 20th century occured on 1/1/1901.

1/1/1901... years are counted like money...there is always a year, so there was never a year zero...1BC moves into 1AD.
