But not an introduction, it's for a friend who is very knowledgable in this, so I'm looking for a more advance book, but with the violent stories.

Everything I learned about Norse mythology I learned in the "Mighty Thor" comic books......may not be completely accurate though.

Get the Eddas, Older Edda, Younger Edda... They are the prime source of knowledge about Norse lore. We do not have all of the Older Edda, but the Younger Edda, that partially bases itself off the Older Edda, was actually a teaching book in Scandinavian poetry, but the text examples included all of these stories from Norse mythology that are a treasure for people interested. It was probably penned by famous Norse writer Snorri Sturlason, although not nearly as famous as his historical works (one of which he was working on before being assassinated in his own home by Norwegian agents). Most of the good analyzing books are only available in Scandinavia, luckily where I am a history student and have access to it.

I've always liked, "The Norse Myths" by Kevin Crossley-Holland. It's a good overview of Norse mythology.

There is also an affordable, good translation (comparatively speaking) of the Poetic Edda (in two volumes) translated by Henry Adams Bellows. This pair of books is published by Dover at a very reasonable price and is full of informative footnotes.

Of course, these books are available at most bookstores and on Amazon.

:)

The Eddas but if they are knowledgeable in lore, then they might all ready have it. The Icelandic Sagas have lots and lots of stories. The book is about three inches thick LOL
