We picked up a board book of this Christmas favorite and found that they had removed this part:
"The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath".
What do you think of that?

Maybe they should have taken out: "He had a broad face and a little round belly, that shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly."

More likely kids these days are going to get a belly like jelly than smoke a pipe, no?

Fun-neee... to learn, of that.

PC with pipe, eh?

(as if kids are going to be "influenced" by that?)

Meanwhile, morons can be videotaped and have records sold by the millions talking about whoring, smoking WEED, shooting police, carrying illegal/conceale handguns at 15 yrs old, completely disregarding women (except their grandma's, don't talk about the grandma's)... you can have heads chopped, cars stolen, deaths by the millions on video games across the world...

But, this gets edited.

I think it's more BS from the politically correct crowd.

The reason they didn't take out the bowl full of jelly part was they didn't want to be seen as picking on those people who have a problem with obsesty*LOL* But then it could be they wanted to point out the problems fat people haave with getting out their lay-z boy recliners. Who knows with all the double standards that exist today.

how ridiculous to remove that part. My mom always explained to us that a long time ago, people didn't know smoking was bad for us, but Santa had since stopped. LOL
It's tradition, it's the way it was written, it's really a history of our society, leave it alone.

I think that is absurd. Where do they get off editing any great literature?!
Did they also they also change the end so that it was more like "HE JUMPED TO HIS SLEIGH, ensuring his seatbelt was snugly secured, to his team, an appropriately diverse team of male, female and ethnic mix, TO HIS TEAM GAVE A WHISTLE, not one with any sort of sexual overtones but merely to get their attention, AND AWAY THEY ALL FLEW LIKE THE DOWN OF A THISTLE, after checking with air traffic control and re-examining his flight plan"...
Ridiculous!

I'm surprised they haven't removed it from the TV version of the movie (yet).
It's stupid political correctness. The same reason they took the guns out of the FBI guys at the end of E.T. & replaced them with radios when they re-released it a couple of years ago.

Totally stupid. Santa still smokes a pipe as does Frosty the snowman.

You have to be kidding me?

Who had the dirty thought in the first place to initiate the removal?

This is getting out of hand!

I have noticed the same thing. Since it is a story read by children, it appears the PC police have gotten to it.
