Ok, so I have a toilet in my house. When I moved it the previous tenant said there was a "trick" to the toilet. I was going to wait to get it fixed but now that xmas is coming... thats not happening. So..... Here it goes!

-The "trick".
When I flush the toilet, I have to reach under the toilet and tank and turn the water off at the wall then back on. I can hear the water start to fill the tank and all is well.

-I tried to tinker with it myself by trying various things (but not disconnecting anything). Now..... This is the NEW problem.

When the water is on, I hear the toilet running but it does not fill the tank, just a about a half inch or so. When I try to flush it, there is no tension and no change in noise or water level. It just wiggles like its not attached to anything.

Its not one of the ones with the big balloon in it if that helps with the innards description.

Any ideas?

The flapper on the crapper is leaking...

Probably. Real easy fix. Just turn off the water. Take the Flapper off (This is what covers the hole to allow water to go into the bowl). Bring it to your local hardware store and get a replacement.

Takes about 2 minutes. If that doesn't work, then it is a problem with the fill valve.

One question, when the water is filling, is it leaking into the toilet bowl? That would surely be a flapper problem.

It sounds like the whole interal system is worn out. In order to get the tank to fill, it could be the flapper in the bottom that closes off the tank or it could be the float valve at the top. (The piece that moves up and down has a valve in it that opens when it is down and closed when it is up) By it running all the time, I would say that it all needs to be replaced. You can get a kit with everything you need in it at Lowes Home Improvement or Home Depot for between 12 and 15 dollars. It's not hard to install, but make sure the water is off before disconnecting anything. Good luck, but I know you can do it.

this is tough without actually seeing your toilet BUT the guts of toilets are pretty easy to figure out. Is the circular rubber seal that lifts up when you flush not getting reseated properly? Obviously the water is coming in but going right back out somewhere. Maybe its just time for new guts which shouldnt be expensive especially if you do it yourself and with a few hand tools it can be done in around an hour. Personally ive found the ones without the big balloon to be a PITA to work on and if you are going to replace one part..just go ahead and replace ALL the guts so they work together properly, wish i could help more but id have to be there and look at it.

Also i had this happen one time where the chain that hooks to the handle was getting caught under the 'flapper' thing that people are talking about and it wasnt resetting itsself right.

wow a pressure problem, the little hose that comes off the fill valve is probably pushing the flapper open when it sprays.try opening the valve only part way 1/3 or even less. the toilet will take longer to fill but it won't push the flapper up as easily. or call a plumber.

There,s a black plastic washer inside the tank which is connect to handel by one chain .In the handell you will see 3 or 4 holes , put the chain ring in last hole which cause the chain go longer and washer will block the water exit hole.Open the valve till tank fill to 3/4 then adjust the flu-er (it has one spring plate with one bar inside) Pull up or down till water stop in 3/4 of tank . flash the tank and Waite till fill again .If tank fill at 3/4 and water stop also black washer blocked the exit you're good to go.

Purchase a Fluidmaster 400A fill-valve from a hardware or Home Center. Less than $10 and has great installation instructions.

Definitely sounds like you need new fill valve and probably flapper but if you are renting isn't this a job for the landlord?

You need a new flapper in the tank on top. Go to the hardware store and ask for it, it is easy to install. The salesperson will help with advice .. Good Luck

The float (guts) of the toliet need replaced. It's fairly easy but you would need tools. You might look at finding a friend and offer him some money to fix it. It should only take a hlf hour or so.

You might as well replace the Flapper too.

As another helpless chick - if you don't have a friend who knows anything about toilets, I would be calling a plumber.
