Tech support said I should get more memory to help my computer run smoother, since I have a huge processor, and my one 512 stick I have is only reporting 504. I ordered a 1 GB, but am inexperienced as to putting it in (which looks pretty straightforward) but am worried about the effect of switch memory sticks on my computer, as I do use this to work on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing you should worry about when putting in your new stick is to make sure the computer is off and unplugged. ESD can damage stick of RAM so make sure you touch the case before touching the RAM and / or wear a ground bracelet attached to the case. After you insert the RAM, it will be safe to put the case back together and then plug in and turn on the computer.

As long as you are buying the same type of memory, there will be no effect on your computer. Just make sure the slots are big enough to handle the RAM amount.

Not only be sure your puter is off but that you turn the rocker switch on the PSU to off position or you unplug the power cord so you dont have any power to your motherboard because the board still gets power when your puter is turned off. Make sure the notch in the stick lines up to the slot then push it in until you hear a click at both ends of the stick. The end clips should close by themselves automatically.

The questioner asked about a simple memory stick - not a fresh ram insertion. The memory stick, if plugged in to the usb slot is recognized as an external disk and that is all there to it. It does not cause any changes in the programs.

I've never had any problem with the memory sticks I've installed, just like the above, turn off the computer before plopping it in, and the OS rolls on merrily along when I boot again.

Memory is just plug and play. Once you install it the computer will automatically recognize the memory. You dont need to worry about Programs or anything

just plug it in. as long as it's the right type of ram you should not have a problem, if you hear a beeping noise it is incompatible, to find the correct ram for your computer go to wwwgoldenram.com and do a upgrade scan. ........You should be able to run both sticks together to get 1.5gig, it always shows up as less than what it is because it shares with the video card.
