I have a serious problem with anger. I can be happy one minute and furious the next and it is usually over something minor.I am arguing with my wife alot and loose my cool at work all the time. I do NOT get violent, I usually just say what I think and then hold in the rest. I have gone through anger management classes in the past and it did not help at all.I have a family history of Bipolar disorder, but I don't get depressed just very angry. I do not have a regular DR. and have always been ashamed to face that I REALLY have a problem. However my mom gave me a pill from her percription of zanex(I think I spelled it wrong) to try a few days ago and it worked great,I actually felt normal.
Please give any advice that you have. What kind of DR. should I go to?

I am furious that they just gave you a pill without any psychological diagnosis.

You must see a psychological counselor and discuss what is happening. After a full evaluation, then some sort of plan needs to be laid out. If you really are Bipolar, then you most likely will need to be on whatever helps you, but only then.

You should also make sure to continue to see a counselor, that is a very important part of the treatment.

I agree, your first step is a good Primary Care Physician for a full physical. It will cost you, but it's a good idea all around for preventative care as well as for ruling out other causes of this problem. The Primary Care Physician should be able to point you in the direction of a good Psychiatrist, which will be the next step in determining Bi-Polar or not. It needs to be a Psychiatrist to begin with because only they can prescribe medications and Bi-Polar is often very difficult to medicate. After you've been diagnosed (assuming it IS Bi-Polar) and gotten the medications worked out, you can move on to a psychiatrist, counselor or psychiatric nurse for maintenence care. Please don't get discouraged if it is difficult to work out the proper mix of medications. It can take time and is often a trial and error procedure, but the end results can really be worth it.

My life was basically on hold through most of my 20s because of anger and frustration. I had to do some serious soul-searching to overcome this. I came to realize two things; My perceptions were my biggest downfall, and that feelings and actions are totally seperate. Feelings are altered through wisdom but actions are totally my responsibility...my choice. Practice the actions I want and they they become who I am. It's got everything to do with courage. Now I truely believe that all emotions stem from two basic ones; love and fear.

Best place to start is usually a PCP (your family medical doctor) and they can make referrals if needed. But see a doc. And just so you know.... just because you haven't had a depressed phase YET doesn't mean you haven't inherited the Bi-Polar traits. Also.. have you checked your blood pressure? I know this runs in your family and that is a more likely answer to what is causing the anger.. but it wouldn't hurt to check... again something your PCP will do.

You really need to see your MD. You need some type of counselor to discuss your problems. Please don't take anyone Else's prescription. This can be very dangerous. You could possibly have an anxiety disorder and this needs to be addressed by an MD. ASAP!
