In order to be able to activate Scott Neidermyer Burke has to free up some cap space for next year. There is some rule with respect to "tagging room" that will prevent them from activating the all star defenseman until they clear room for next year. neidermyer is under contract for next year. Per TSN (see below) he needs to move about 3M of salary from next year.

Any thoughts on who he can trade and where? The other GMs realizing he is over a barrel are unlikely to offer up much. Also many teams have their own cap issues.

Bob, my thoughts exactly. he will need to replace him anyway next year if he gets rid if Schneider. He also is going to need cap space to sign Perry or risk losing another to Edm. This Bertuzzi signing looks like a mistake- I doubt he will find any takers on him- if he could without resorting to Snoop's sol'n it would solve today's problem, keep Scneider for next year and free up 4 million for Perry.

LITY, good points, itseems as if the Neidermyer contract would have been included in the same cal'n when he resigned Getzlaf. I am only an accountant not a capologist. Do your Hawks want/need a Schneider type d-man?

Bob, 2 out of three is real good. Also the east probably makes more sense for Burke.

Mathieu Schneider and his 5+ million are the only reasonable thing I can think of. The NYR make perfect sense if not for the fact that they have their own cap issues. Blackhawks maybe? Again it might run them over. NJ Devils could use him but Lou is cheap. Buffalo could really use him and they have the cap space but don't seem commited to winning. Isles maybe?? Hard to say but since he was the guy they got to replace Nidermayer, you would think he would be the guy to go.
Although he has said THIS will be his last year so they would need to replace him again next year. The wheels keep spinning, round and round.

There is some question as to the validity of McKenzie's remarks within the NHL.

The only reason that Niedermayer doesn't count against the cap now is that he is suspended, and his salary is in limbo. But, he hasn't retired, and the numbers filed with the league and NHLPA SHOULD BE counting his salary for next year as he is legally under contract (suspensions are a 'now' thing and not a 'future' thing).

While the NHL makes the base values of NHL contracts public, they don't make available all the ins and outs of the cap, and while McKenzie is as much an NHL insider as anybody, there is still some doubt as to the accuracy of his statements.

Some people believe that this will not be an issue until the summer.
Others believe it isn't an issue at all and Bob McKenzie trying to look important.

I honestly have no clue what the situation is aside from what the NHLPA reported yesterday for this year only.

If what McKenzie said is true............Teemu Selanne has played his last game as a Duck.

My Hawks would take Schneider, O'Donnell, or Beauchemin in a heartbeat. Our most experienced D-men are named Sopel and Zyuzin - yeah I know....who are they?...............

Bob
Still not buying it, that rule is for ENTERING into contracts. Niedermayer is already under contract. Getzlaf is NOT an issue because they have the 10% wiggle room after the season ends until October 1st (or whenever the European game is held). I'm thinking that there is no rush to move a body before Niedermayer plays a game.

There are also discussions I'm sure between Burke, and Niedermayer concerning next year, and I assume those conversations have covered off everything of a legal nature.

Burke is not a stupid man. He was prepared for this announcement. And I'm pretty sure that Burke has a better handle on the situation than Tolensky and McKenzie. Again, Tolensky is looking at things from a black and white perspective..........but believe you me...........the salary cap is a grey area (if not a black hole)

Like McKenzie said, the only viable solution is to move Schnieder or Bertuzzi and who is going to take Bertuzzi that doesn't have their own cap issues. I can see Burke giving away a few lesser names and not getting rid of one big name. That is the only scenario I can see, along with Burke removing "Take all the time you need" from of his vocabulary.
As Lity said, this may not even be a real issue, but Burke looked pretty pissed during an interview with TSN yesterday. Then again Burke always looks that way.

Has Todd Bertuzzi offered anything to the team? Mathieu Schneider is important, although he comes with a hefty pricetag, but Todd Beruzzi hasn't contributed very much. I can see him going.
