I killed a bug the other night and my nephew said I shouldn't do that... I asked him why, and he said he didn't know why... He just knows it isn't nice. (He's 3 BTW.) How do we just know these things?

He knows because we or born into sin which means we already know right from wrong from the time we are born.He knows that it was living before you did smash it, and now it is never going to move again. Also at three he know way more then he is letting on he wonders and listens a lot and will absorb everything such as death on a tv show he seen.He probably noticed when someone died on tv say jimminy cricket the others were sad and that gave him the message that killing even bugs is wrong.

At three he probably really does know why/what he believes.
The problem most likely is he doesn’t know/hasn’t learned how to put the words together to explain it to you.

Even as adults knowing something is one thing. But being able to explain it clearly to someone else is often very difficult.

However in his case, I suspect he feels sort of like the bug, being little and “squashed” by everyone that is bigger than he is. Thus he feels sorry for the bug.

“squashed” in this case would probably be all the new rules and discipline that we must start enforcing on children at his age for is own safety as well as to teach him right from wrong. At that age we just don’t understand why all the rules and discipline are suddenly being thrown at us.

Just something to consider.
But don’t put to much stock in what I say, I rarely know what is going in my own head much less a child’s mind.

that's because he is still 3 and little baby and he is friend to those little bug and so if you kill them them that mean you are hurting him and hurting his/her friend. so be careful around unharmed little bug. he is so sweet. I just you were like that when you were young because your mind was free and you didn't know anything about what bug or instinct do until your parent, friends or people tell you that they are bad and now you start to believe them. to him he is not like. he is kind and his mind is still empty and waiting to be fill with knowledge. let me tell you something. did you know where I'm from any harmful instinct bug like spider or scorpion will never harm or bit a young baby because they said that little children a bless and are angel or angels are them whenever they need them. so he know that killing something with life is not good because it won't be good if god trade your life with a bug and people keep on killing you or stepping on you. you wouldn't be happy. that's the same way he is like and like i said. we all were like that even you. we use to be kind, nice and sweet to little animal and instinct until we learn about them. sorry for too long answer but I just wanna let you know. bye and tell him that may God good bless you and be with you and I hope you turn out better than us now and care for animals and instincts too.

Some people are just more thoughtful than others. You will have to be careful around the little guy. How sweet!

That's not knowledge, it's empathy.

And emotions are natural and instinctual.

we may be scared in our unconscious lest we should be meted with the same treatment. it is our insecurity embodied.
