there were mines to dig and fields to plant and work work work to be done in the New World.
A large percentage of the New World natives died off of diseases contracted from the Spanish explorers...like smallpox, a disease unknown today but 80% fatal as recently as 1900.

the Spanish needed workers.

African kings and princes and chiefs had enemies they had captured to sell. They had been selling other Africans to Arab slave traders for 500 years before 1492.


About 75 % of the Africans sold into slavery by other Africans in the slave trade centuries ended up in Brazil and South America.

Mostly because of what was going in the other direction cotton, sugar, tobacco, molasses all labour-intensive commodities.
