Windows XP has a lot of drivers included with the operating system CD that supports older hardware. Typically Windows 98SE drivers don't work with Windows XP. New ones are installed in it's place when XP is installed. If there is any hardware not working correctly, get on the internet and download the XP-compatible drivers for the hardware. There is about an 80 to 90% chance that all your hardware will be working just fine after the XP install. Probably just the video card, or motherboard-specific drivers will need to be installed.

The big concern is getting your programs re-installed. But this is a good time to re-evaluate what programs you really need installed.

Hello,

(ANS) Windows 98 SE uses a FAT32 filing system if my memory is correct this means that you need to take a bit of care when backing up your drives.

Why? OK! if you have (had) a blank empty disk drive to restore the data onto then you would have to first of all reformat the empty disk to accept FAT32 otherwise you may not restore you files, data & programs as you need.

**Beware that most newer disk drives either come as NTFS or expect to be used for windows NT or newer. Your using win98 and so the disk has to be formatted with that in mind.

**You would need special software to backup your disk drives, one such program is "Version Backup" which is extremely high quality and yet is still freeware. Another option is to use a program like Norton Ghost which makes a perfect bit by bit image of your drives that can be restored at a later date.

**Have a look through this website http://www.snapfiles.com this site has both high quality free-ware & share-ware (try before you buy). I suggest you look through the Free-ware section, next look under backup tools or system tools, etc. I'm VERY confident you will find something suitable that works with win98.

Hope thats useful?

Kind Regards Ivan

It is not usually done.
