I have a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer and it's making a grinding noise that gets louder when I press the brakes. Could it be the drive shaft?

I already changed the brakes but the noise persists.

Time to replace your brake pads.

That noise is designed in to the system to let you know that.

cheers.

sounds to me like your pads are scraping into the rotors and ruining them, get those brakes checked.

You probably need new front brake pads, and if you've let them wear down too far, you may need new front rotors too.
