a river can empty into the sea or the ocean under 2 forms:it can form a delta or it can form an estuary. estuaries a characteristic to very big rivers, with a large flow (the amazon for example). Deltas are characteristic to smaller rivers. let me give you an example:The Danube empties into the black sea and it forms a delta. The delta is consisted out of 3 arms which are something like 3 separate rivers in which the danube splits before going into the sea. other examples of deltas:the nile - egypt, thames - great britain, rhone - france, volga - russia
