YA! (Like the cows, I always stop to eat and go to bed - but not being a dairy cow, I don't head to the barn to be milked)

Cows are very much creatures of habit. The cows WILL come home for food, bed (if barned) and milking. They actually even follow paths - will beat the same path right down, and it isn't more than 12 inches wide. I don't know how the statement ever got to the point that it was interpreted as meaning a very long amount of time.

Old farm expression.

The cows will go back to the barn at night.

"We will work in the field untill the cows come home"

The cows return to where they are fed at night (actually at feeding time which is around night time).

Since our cow was in a fenced in pasture, it never left home...
