Marriage ends at death.
The IRS lets you file a joint return as if you are still married, for the year your spouse dies and the next two years as well, provided you had been filing joint returns in the past.
You are legally called a Widow or Widower after your spouse dies.
You can also refer to yourself as single, if you wish.

I know a widower who lost his wife almost two years ago and he goes around pressuring women to sleep with him, but he still wears that ring. I don't know what's up with that. If he's still married, won't the ghost of his wife just kill him? I say when a spouse dies, mourn the loss and remove the ring before you start dating again.

Marriage is an institution of the state. Therefore, the marriage certificate is a legal contract. That is why the contract is "until death due us part."
Once the person dies, the contract is over and that ends the marriage legally.
Take care,

No, the spouse is dead, so there's no one to be married to.
However, I think a lot of surviving spouses still 'feel' married.
