*****

I wear my old hat with pride,
Brim worn away by hand salute,
Resolute, strides slower,
And carefully chosen steps,
For the old soldier,

Those that die, stay alive
In the hearts,
Of we who carry,
A flag draped coffin,

Taps brings us tears, not from fear,
But from love we hold inside,
For the fallen brother,
And his pride,

*****

Hope you're wearing something in addition to your hat. Yes, the tears flow, not only in pride, but in sadness. No soldier need ever be ashamed of serving his/her country--even in a war that should not have been.

Ah, if your wit but matched your poetic skill. Another nice piece of writing. The extra line in the first stanza, although normally awkward, actually flows quite well.

nicely done
