I was just wondering Im talking about the train derailment in Shepherdsville, KY that happened and I wasnt sure what it was they dropped over the fires.

I believe you are talking about metal fires, such as magnesium, titanium and other such materials. This type of fire is only put out by smothering the fire, this is due to the high temperature of the metal burning and also the fact that these metals react violently when water is applied. An extinguishing agent called Met- L-X is used on this type of fire, and is normally scooped on the fire, but you can also use sand and get the same effect. There are extinguishers made for this application as well. Hope this is what you were looking for.
