i am not a fan of Filipino movies but i don't think all of them are crappy.

i have a theory that Filipino's have a tendency to settle for less. maybe it's because of poverty or the direction the Philippines are going. also, their culture is built that way, that trying to be contented with what you currently have, even if you deserve more. they think that it's a form of sacrifice or something that's good.

there's a very thin line separating being contented and stagnation.

another thing colonial mentality. observe closely everything you see on tv in the philippines, everything is either copied or adopted from other countries. The closer their movies or shows, even ads, look similar to americans, the more they patronize it. of course other countries do the same thing. but it's quite disturbing if you see Filipino's liking other cultures, it's not being hospitable but just hating your own, maybe not directly but it's the same thing.

Filipino's mostly think they don't really have a choice, so instead of expecting better movies, they settle for less and try to force themselves to just enjoy it.

so if you're a movie producer and you also earn by doing "not so goo" movies, why would you waste your time making a very good one.

Unfairness to Filipino movie industries, that's not always the case. I've heard that vcd's is not very good, they are not the same quality as dvd's. Also make sure you are buying the original one and not pirate.
Bought quite a lot of Filipino dvd's and watched them all abroad and they are all fine, no problem at all very clear.
No background sound of those noises you are saying. Unless, depends to the type of film and the setting of the story of the film. Scenes from the provinces would probably have some typical sound of the place, you can't help it, and that what makes the film more realistic. Background sounds should matches the scenes, don't you think so?

When you go to the cinemas and watch film, yes i agree, some of the film showing are very bad. Sometimes the picture is squashed, blurred, or even out of focus. Well that is something to do with the enginners of the owner of the cinemas. Their equipment are not very good or probably old and i'm not surprised. They don't believed on changing equipments that are still working. lol Let it serve until the end of the equipments life. Save save save until to the last drop. Kuripot and pinoy. lol

Are you sure you are buying or renting the original films?

You should not generalize. Some Filipino movies have won in international festivals, so they are not seen as crappy by foreign audiences.

If we go to specific films, actually I do not see the crappy cinematography. I do not hear the hissing, nor the sounds of dogs barking, unless they are ambient sound.

If at all, we do not have as good a cinematography vs US films because we do not use as many cameras as Hollywood producers do. They use more than 10 cameras per film, and special cameras for special situations. This thing costs, but US made movies can afford this technology because the market is wider.

Well, Filipino movies are made with outdated films rather than storing it on a hard drive like they do in USA and other countries. Filipino film makers also use older cameras therefore, the image quality is not as clear. The stories are sometimes good and sometimes bad, I've seen some movies and shows that have half-baked sub plots that made the stories complicated and hard to understand. However, some of the stories are good because of the well thought out plots and good acting

There are a lot of good movies here. It's just that the mass go for the 'baduy' ones. Those movies which have no uniqueness. Most of the 'baduy' movies have the same story line, ending etc. But our Indie films are great. There's Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo, Tribu, Ataul for Rent........etc.

I would love to watch more Philippine-made movies. And the reason I don't is not so much the overall poor quality of the film (sound and sharpness of picture). It is that there is too much crying and tears, and the locations they shoot in (rundown neighbourhoods/businesses, ghettos, etc.) look disgusting.

Now, don't tell me there are no other appropriate places to shoot a scene typifying poverty. The American and Korean movie directors use clever camera tricks to do the same things.

I'm not a movie lover but I know how to appreciate Filipino-made shows, movies and programs as I love my own. And maybe the Philippine government should finance our movie industry so producers and directors can create quality movies and please enough those people like you.

Because its the same banana all over again, same theme, like poor man meets rich girl and vice versa, then the girl gets kidnapped and the "tropa" saves them, the police never made it in time. Same slapstick, song and dance routine.

Like the other people who answered said, not enough budget, some actors/actresses as long as their good looking their casted in.

Or maybe their just focusing on making films for a quick buck.

One filipino movie I liked was Jose Rizal, it was alright, except for Gardo Versoza who played Bonifacio. He sucks.
