Everything was fine this morning. I flushed once and the toilet worked properly. Then I heard this faint "Psssssss" sound and I took off the toilet tank lid. Hmmmm. No water in the tank!
Not being familiar with the mechanism I had a good look and it seems the water is drizzling out of the black barrel looking thingy. Tried to flush again. Yep. No water in the tank so no flush. Does anyone know if I should try to fix this myself or call a plumber. Any suggestions wouuld be a help. Thanks in advance.

I've gone and had a second look and there is a black hose running from the barrel thingy into a white pipe. There is no water coming from that hose. It looks like barrel thingy has sprung a leak.

I would guess that the fill-valve has broken. This is located right behind the flush handle and is where the water enters the tank. You can easily replace it in less than a 1/2 hour. Go to a Home Center (Lowes, Home Depot) or a hardware store and purchase a Fluidmaster 400A fill-valve. Comes with easy to understand instructions and is a quality valve for under $10.

there's a hole at the bottom of the back of the tank and it might have been blocked by the chain. After you flush it runs for a moment until this little blocker blocks the hole. if it gets blocked it will just keep running water. pull the chain out (or whatever might be blocking it) and it will begin to fill again. there's a float that causes it to stop when it is at the top. to prevent this (if this is your problem) just take up the slack in the chain. thers a lever with a hook on it that is attached to the handle. just move the link on the chain to shorten the slack and the problem should never happen again.
