No I do not agree! Most commercials to sell products are not in tune with the real world. In the USA anyway.
They are cartoons and cavemen and animals. Anything to get your attention. They have to have you watch it before your inspired to buy anything.
We do not have lizards selling insurance?
Or do we have cave men who get their feelings hurt?
People who buy their wife a Lexus for Christmas?
Or expensive jewelery? My wife said, "get me a digital camera to take pictures of our children"
That is a more realistic gift.
I get computer games, and I usually get a bunch of movies on CD's. Maybe a hand knitted scarf or a sweater.
From the parents, my mom knitts us all something to wear.
All wool socks, that virtually never wear out. Your feet can't freeze in wool.
Do you ever see yarn advertised for Christmas?

This is an interesting question. I think advertising is in some way a reflection of people's desires. Since the people in most advertising I see have health, status, happiness, peace of mind, and are liked by the opposite sex, perhaps those are the things people in our culture desire. But doesn't the world desire these things also?
