Better to have an auger ran through the line. Root control products take a long time (if at all) to kill roots. The pipe is not normally filled up totally, so the product is only working on the bottom of the pipe. You need to realise that if roots are in the drain pipes, the pipes are going to fail eventually and need to be replaced. Murphys Law says it will happen at the worst time possible.

Run an auger through the drain this will remove blockage safely, the root killer wont break down the roots so you would still have dead roots in drain, plus root killer is a poison and we have enough poison in the water.
