Only in excess is sugar bad for our teeth. We get plenty of sugar in other foods, foods which break down into sugar naturally. Actually, our food breaks down into two different items, protiens and sugars. Meats, cheeses, etc break down into protiens, while vegtables, breads break down into sugars in our body durring digestion.
Prehistoric man probably had some serious health issues, but I doubt is sugar induced cavities was one. We didn't obtain sugar and sugary foods until a couple of centruies ago, prehistoric man did not have access to sugar.
Prehistoric man usually was lucky to live to a ripe old age of forty. We now have the ability to live up to a hundred years old, over twice as long as prehistoric man. This is due to modern medicine, and good physical and enviromental hygiene, as well as a better diet, by "better", I mean more abundent, and regualar. Not many in any developed country go hungry on a regular basis. Some due, but once it was normal for everyone to go through the "hungry days", which was the period between the end of winter, when supplies wore out, and the replentishing of those food supplies.
Prehistoric man lost most of his teeth by the age of twenty. So, yeah, cavities where prevalent, but not actually terminal. They didn't know to clean their teeth on a regular basis, or have access to dentists where they could have the accumulated plaque removed from their teeth on a regular basis. Nor could they have the cavities they developed filled, which stops the decay from continueing. Once they had a cavity it just continued rotting until it fell out, broke, or had to be physically removed due to acute pain.

Sugar isn't bad for your teeth. NOT brushing is bad.
Speaking of brushing, How do we know that the Toothbrush was invented in West Virgina?..........If it were invented in any other state, it would have been called a Teethbrush. lol

well if you really think about it...we only need sugar in moderation. not so much that our teeth will rot within a few hours or days after consumption.
the human body is so insanely complicated!
but yeah that's my guess ;]
