It wasn't just drugs that defined the hippie movement in response to the previous poster. Most Americans were against the Vietnam War, and the hippies represented the large majority of those people. The war itself was the reason for hippies' attitudes of peace, love, and harmony. They longed to change the world through these methods and psychedelic rock helped them promote this ideology. Though drugs were definitely a part of this counterculture, they are only a part of the overall movement, which remains one of the largest movements in our history. The Woodstock Festival still holds records for attendance and was one of the most peaceful gatherings of yes, very drug induced people, who were there not only to partake in drug activity, but to promote their message. Unfortunately, people like Charles Manson would later contribute to the sometimes negative picture that people often paint of hippies. So though drugs were a big part of this culture, it is not the sole, or even biggest reason for their cause. Vietnam was the biggest reason. And all hippies were not just a bunch of drug-induced, flower happy people. Let us not forget, some of the most brilliant 'hippies' to come out of this movement, namely Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs who launched Apple Computers.

Psychedelic Rock is trippy and is pretty much all written by someone under the influence (hence it's relation to hippies - drugs) This genre of music helped define the hippie because hippies are like transcendentalists and are trying to find a way to "expand their mind" or "break out" of the norm, most of those things are rrelated to drugs and trippy music that they made while smoking pot and doing LSD.

Your answer to this is simple. Hippies got there name for believing in all that peace love soul harmony garbage. This attitude came straight from the drugs they took themselves. The music that ensued this lifestyle seemed to be fittingly aquanting to the ears of these people. Pink Floyd was straight out a trippy journey for the mind for these people.

So ya' see, it was simply the drugs that made them who they are as hippies.
