Does the NBA care about defense anymore?

Believe it or not, there was a time the "All Defensive Team" was considered an honor. Anyone who has played basketball knows playing defense is work.

Is the lack of defense in the NBA a sign that, by in large, NBA players are lazy? I think, so.

Watch a game from thirty years ago, and compare the defensive intensity to a game from the modern era. There's no comparison. Back then, you could have an uncontested 20 footer whenever you wanted, nobody doubled the post, and cutters went pretty much unmolested.

The only reason people pretend there's no defense in the NBA is that they like to call black people lazy. Same reason Clint Eastwood's movie "Bird" made it seem like Charlie Parker just shot up some smack and magically started playing arpeggios.

They stopped caring about defense years ago except for a handful of teams like Detroit and San Antonio (who are viewed as boring).

Its not that the players are lazy. Its just that they were never taught to play proper defense or good shooting in many cases. On top of that offense gets you on TV. They grow up watching highlights of dunks and crazy passes. You never see a block or a nice mid range shot.

the league cant make up its mind. they looked down at the bad boy tactics that the pistons did during their heyday. the rockets-knicks final was a TOTAL bore (unless u were a rox or knicks fan) with the most memorable thing happening during the series being the OJ low speed white blazer chase coverage during the game. so what did they do? they said they needed more scoring and moved in the 3 pt line to help add to this. but when they had guys like alonzo mourning, low post players hitting from the new,closer 3 pt line...they had to change it again and go back to the original distance.

i mean they changed the rules so much to handicap certain types of players by eliminating hand checking things like that but i just think the league doesnt know what it wants.

hell, it was so damn hard for them to decide on the type of ball to use (and then change it during mid-season) that this indecisiveness doesnt surprise me in the slightest.

for all the good stern had done in promoting the league worldwide he sure has made it a damn confusing one at the same time by the decisions he's made.

It now seems that most teams only play some defense in key games and in the playoffs. Every NBA game looks the same to me and I know other fans feel the same way. In part, that is why college basketball is on the rise in popularity.

I agree completely. Just last night we were talking about this during the Lakers game. Imagine how interesting it would be if people actually played defense? The best offense is a good defense.

but there is a large focus on defense. spurs especially. and they're a championship team. its recognized defense wins games, and the increasing run and gun style in the NBA doesn't neccesarily make the players lazy (though i agree with you and think a lot of them are)

I dont think that they are lazy, but they just dont play defense to play intertaning basketball, but some teams like Spurs take advantage of that and thats why they win championships.
