I have a degree and a master’s degree in engineering, but I struggle to write anything more than the bare facts in written communications. This has become a bit embarrassing at work, so is there any particular reason for this and what would help me improve my writing skills?

It's quite normal ,though in varying degrees, with people educated and trained in precision, precise and factuality intensive professions like medicine and engineering.Try to write small essays on well known topics in double space in your spare time and go on improving them(Use space available).Slowly but surely, you shall be able to write at least a few lines on any mumbo jumbo or unimportant topics. That's what is the major part of memos, noting s,proceedings, minutes ,agendas and all such writings consists of.Being a mechanical, industrial and plant engineer,I had a hard time in the beginning while undergoing an advanced management course. With practice,I can write now a few paragraphs on anything with a little bit of knowledge like ant hills, cauliflowers ,how to keep warm in snow bound areas and what not. With your intelligence it would be ,what's known as a 'cake walk'.All the best.

Its true a bit what the others say in that people are wired a bit different, but I don't see why you can't put some of the same thought processses into writing

use your logic to plan out plots and to explain character interactions. Then ask yourself ok this is logical, but do I find it entertaining? exciting etc? Then try and find ways to expand and embellish things. make up character sheets and storyboards to really imerse yourself in the world you're trying to create.

It also doesn't hurt to read more books, and really look at the flow, and get the feel for everything. It will also steer you in a direction as to what you like and don't like.

if you don't think "logical" people can write well, read The curious incident of the Dog in the Nightime.

You are just not wired that way. Ususally people who are strong in math and problem solving, are not strong in language skills. Just as artists are not usually too good at either. If you have a secretary, she should be able to help you out with these things. If you don't, and you need, say, presentation speeches, or something along those lines, there are plenty of college students looking for a little side work.

Engineering has to do with math, NOT writing. Most of the reknown writers and authors of the past were not very educated at all. Modern day scribes probably aren't either but nobody has done studies on them yet.

you may evaluate writing a e book/novel. you caught my interest for the period of the total dream. What i think of it potential is which you're feeling suffocated, or trapped, or possibly even pissed off that interior the society you reside in now, in genuine existence, isn't allowing you to be different, the way which you have been meant to be. there is something protecting you lower back, and you're easily attempting your maximum suitable to fulfill the opposition. interior you % to be unfastened to do what your physique and ideas dictate, yet your environment do no longer % such distinction to disrupt its normality, what it considers common. you notice a glimmer of wish each and every recent dream you have, and that's what could provide you an part. do no longer combat it. study to settle for it and others will stick to. The failure of each and every dream earlier hand tells of the situations you have been put in a place the place you have been compelled to "leap on the bandwagon," yet secretly % to particular your inner being, one that the opposition isn't conscious of. The discomfort you sense is your discouragement and your sadness in your self which you haven't any longer succeded earlier. this is like a slap to the face whenever you kick a ball, you omit, and fall on your lower back! (i could understand). The pause on your "bane" replaced into society's understanding that your efforts isn't stilled, and the flower that replaced into given to you replaced into yet another attempt in silencing you, yet with sense sorry approximately. save attempting and at last you will set your self unfastened. Write a e book. Make tens of millions.

practice makes perfect.
write a journal everyday, this shall kick-start creativity. allot a 15 minutes break for essay writing everyday as this shall help you to be more familiar with writing techniques. and of course the best way to help yourself is thru reading. reading gives you ideas about how concepts are properly delivered thru written communication..good luck! ^_^

Start a journal. Spend an hour every day writing, about anything. After a few weeks you will see your style begin to improve. Like anything, practice yields rewards.

Writing isn't all to do with how well educated you are, I'd take a writing class if you really have a problem with it.
