US News ranks Syracuse University at a very respectible #50. This puts it in the top tier.

The major negatives about Syracuse is that the winters are harsh and people wear lots of orange. The plusses are good academics and good college basketball.

Syracuse is 246 miles from New York City. NYC, Philadelphia and Toronto, Ontario are all about four hours by car.

The closest city is Buffalo -- which is about 150 miles away.

Um, sorry to say, Ranto, the nearest city is Syracuse...the University is in the City. Rochester, at about 70 miles, and Albany, at about 130 miles, are closer than Buffalo.

Going back to the question, SU is an excellent university, but if you're going for a liberal arts education (as opposed to a particular major for which SU is renowned), you may wish to attend a less expensive university.

The trip to NYC is about 4 hours by car. Train, bus and plane transportation is available at reasonable cost, and you'll likely find other students with whom you can ride share.

Syracuse is an excellent university. It's well respected, and has one of the top communications/advertising programs in the US. Its other academics are also strong.

It's no where near NYC. I'd estimate, it's about four hours from the city.
